*Manly* Cat 4 WEU

Page Valley, August 24th, 2008

Hello, and welcome to the manly Cat 4 edition of weekend update.  I’m James Drane filling in for Jeff, who is recovering from a sex change operation.

And now for today’s top stories…

Artemis took 4th and 5th place in the Cat 4 men’s race yesterday at Page Valley.  The surge was led by Paul Rades and followed up by James Drane.  It was a shock when it was realized that it was actually Paul riding across the finish line and *not* John Shea with a wig on.  Paul was previously believed to still be near death, in a full body cast, being tended to by his wife in the south of France.  Sources close to other riders in the race were not sure how badly this information reflected on the cyclists’ future chances at ever beating Paul in a race.  One quite unhelpful little girl selling Cokes at the finish line commented, saying, “I don’t really care who wins.”  A fellow Cat 3 Artemesian said, “Paul es muy rapido, pero no es tan rapido como yo.”  Other Artemis entrants in the race included Scott Schaeffer and Johnny Freeman.  As of this report, we still do not know how they fared in the race.  It is hypothesized that their tires were melted by the sun’s intense heat, but when they reached the finish line after carrying their bikes for the entire last lap, everyone had left the race, except for the little girl selling Cokes.

Others from the Artemis contingent were out in force, but I’ll leave it to them to recount those events.

Have a great day and a pleasant tomorrow.

Highway to Heaven Hill Climb and Millersburg

Highway to Heaven Hill Climb, Ellicott City, MD & Millersburg Stage Race, PA
August 16-17, 2008

The TT had a good representation from Artemis.  Barry Wilcox brought out his gaggle of kids to start racing.  In addition to Barry racing the 50+, Buddy winning the 15-16, and Josh coming in 2nd in the 13-14, Emma and Benjamin (both 10-12) made their debut!  Mona wanted to back out, but I reminded her that “Even a 10-year old can do it!”  With that said, Mona ended up doing the TT twice on a borrowed bike.

Liz and Sheila made a special appearance, and Linh and Julie crushed for 1st & 2nd in the Cat 4 Women.  Looks like Julie is on the comeback trail after her surgery earlier in the season.  Speaking of comebacks, Paul Rades is back on the bike after his broken elbow at the Murad Road Race, and set a sub-4 minute time…Wow!

Kudos also goes out to MM (Margaret) for doing the TT THREE times!  (Men 50+, Women 40+, & Cat 4 Women), and all of the others who did it twice:  Zoe, Mona, Mike M., Sheila.

sunsetNow for Millersburg…It was a great week-end.  Millersburg is this really cool old town that edges the Susquehanna River about ½ hour north of Harrisburg.  The sunset along the river was beautiful.  They have this historical paddle boat ferry that crosses the river…one of the few (or only?) ones left in the US.  There were no traffic lights and the road courses were excellent.  Everyone was pleasant and helpful.  There are only a few hotels in the area, and we had 3 rooms in one of them.  A lot of others were in Host Housing, even with Amish families, and have great stories to tell!  The promoter, Shane, seems like a really nice and enthusiastic guy, and did a fantastic job of getting the whole town on board.  People that we met were sorry that THEY didn’t offer their houses, but promised to next year.  Everyone in town that we encountered went out of their way to give the racers as much as they could.  I saw a house that I just LOVED and I happened to meet the owner the next day, just in passing.  *I’m* staying there next year!

bobkeWe arrived on Friday night and went to a hosted dinner by the promoter where Bob Roll spoke.  It was fun; Bob thinks he’s a stand-up comedian.  Funny.  It was odd, because the gazebo that we were under starting filling up with BATS!  There were bats swooping all over while Bobke was speaking, but no one seemed to mind.  Then they all decided that there was nothing good there and they all flew away.  We also watched this big, beautiful full moon rise over the golf course.

We got up early on Saturday and it was pretty chilly and foggy.  PA weather is not like our muggy DC air.  Bobke was there to see us off at the start and I think that some of us girls embarrassed him a little, but all in good fun.  The 12-mile TT was an out-and-back course.  The course ran along the railroad (and the river beyond that, but who had a chance to look), and was lightly rolling.  Mike Githens won the TT for the 123 Men.

Next was the crit.  It was a long course that went around the High School and then through town.  There were a few tight turns and a stretch that went past a Retirement Home.  The Old Folks were sitting outside cheering all day!  Before the start/finish a gradual rise begins that goes on through a chicane.  Nothing hard, but it will wear on you.  Amanda had a decent finish for the women.  Mike was supposed to shelter himself to maintain his GC position, but got caught in the pack in the last turn before the sprint, which subsequently crashed.  Mike was OK, but cooked a nice carbon tubular wheel.

girlsThat evening, there was another hosted event with Bob Roll, where we had beer and munchies.  This is where we all got out photo-op with him.  We then went to dinner in town to one of the few restaurants, Wayne’s.  They still allow smoking in PA restaurants and we ended up outside on a small back patio.  It was perfect for us!  Wayne, himself, kept coming out to check on us and talk even though it was incredibly busy inside.  It must have been the 6 attractive women drawing him out!

The Road Race was on Sunday.  It was a nice rolling 18-mile loop that, for the most part, had a rolling enclosure. It was again, another beautiful day; a bit warmer than the day before. The big Amish family that hosted the C-3 Ladies, were perched along this precarious downhill turn cheering for the racers as they sped by, giving the lead riders an excuse stay ahead.  The feed zone was right on Main Street just before the finish line, so it was convenient for spectators and feeders, alike.  The promoter supplied designated volunteers to feed (in case that you didn’t have your own) and not only provided the water, but cookie feeds!  They also provided wraps for food after each race.  Jen and Amanda fared very well in the race considering Jen launched two attacks during the race and Amanda was still experiencing flexor pain.  MA finished with her group, too.  Ramon ended up if the front group of the 123 Men and finished well, but the dynamics of that race seemed to have changed each lap.

Overall, a fun week-end.  Everyone who raced vowed to return again next year…AND to bring even more women!  To end our visit to Millersburg, we decided to take the ferry across the river and try a different route home.  It was VERY kewl!  We met up with this guy, Rich, who had raced and was headed up to State College.  He was fun and a good sport with us Girls.  We also got a good education on the ferry and area history from our Captain, who seemed to be mildly interested in what this bike racing thing was all about!

Tour of Christiana Criterium

Tour of Christiana Criterium
Christiana, PA
Sunday, August 10
Women Open (Cat 4 scored separately)
Racers: Dori and Jen

The drive to Christiana was a little nerve-wracking; it rained, it stopped, it sprinkled, it stopped. Then, we arrived to the course, and the weather was dry, the ground was dry, and the sky was blue!! By the time 1:15pm rolled around, Dori and I were warmed up and ready to start. Unfortunately for me, my warm up was not as good as it should have been, and I was distracted and didn’t force myself to stay on the rollers long enough like I usually do. Having done the Church Creek TT the day before, my legs needed the warm up.

For those of you who have never seen the course, it is very technical with one steep hill. The race happens to start at the bottom of that hill, and as we were staging, I looked around to make sure my gearing was right with everyone else’s around me. Indeed, I didn’t want to be spinning when the Aarons, Juice Plus and Amorosa girls were powering up in the big ring in lap one. I chose to match my gearing with Aarons, but it didn’t really matter later anyway because it didn’t start out fast.

The first lap felt great, and strangely, there were already gaps! I made my way up to the middle and then to the front of the pack before and during the technical sections (this course had 9 turns total, and 8 were in the second half of the lap). I felt great, and I had a crazy impulse to attack on the second lap on the hill. Juice Plus went with me, and knowing that there weren’t any teams there to chase us down, I thought that perhaps something might stick. Having overestimated my ability at the time and my cornering comfort level that early in the race, I could not keep the pace and JP waited for me several times. Our 18 second gap diminshed, and I was gassed. Unfortunately for me, the course is absolutely unforgiving, and I paid dearly for being impulsive and dumb. I was off the back after that, and spent a couple of laps recovering before I soloed the last half of the race on my own. Fortunately for me, I still had good legs and ended up passing 4 people as I TTed through. The cheerleaders on the sidelines helped a lot, and I tried to cross the finish line with a gigantic smile as I was happily (yes, I was happily) powering up those climbs. With about 4 or 5 laps to go, it started to rain on half of the course (strange sensation that was). Then with 3 laps to go, it started POURING!! Cornering was fun in that weather, so I was sort of glad I was alone at that point (talking myself out of the disappointment of being off the front then off the back).

With two laps to go, I saw Dori and tried to chase her. She crossed the finish line right before me that lap, and our race was cut one lap short as the field came in right after us. Dori was super strong, super smart, and she ended up winning the Cat 4s and coming in 8th overall. I was 9th overall/8th in the 1/2/3s. If I heard the story correctly, Dori was in the field for most of the race until the Juice Plus girl was off the front, crashed, then chased down by the field because she didn’t take her free lap to keep her gap (!!), and when the field latched on to the JP girl that time (before she ATTACKED AGAIN), Dori lost her wheel. WOW! Fantastic job out there. I was so proud to see her do so well!

Since that was my first race back in about three weeks, I’m not too bummed. Learning to race smarter day by day.
