I began racing after a chance meeting on Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park with David “SuperDave” Osborne. Witnessing firsthand the lack of support and mentorship in women’s racing in our district, in 1999 I joined with three other like-minded women, Evelyn Egizi, Robyn McGuckin, and Kiersten Johnson, and founded Artemis Racing, Inc.
I started road biking while living in Japan. Initially I did local club rides and then branched into longer distances and touring. After cycling most of the coastline and length of Japan, I decided to try racing. I did well in local races and was recruited by a national women's semi-pro cycling team, Asahi Muur Zero.
